Scientists say bitcoin is destroying environments and we’re all doomed

If you’re thinking of making you’re thinking of making your fortune through bitcoin you may want to just spare a thought for the environment.

According to scientists at the University of University of Hawaii the energy cost of ‘mining’ the cryptocurrency could lead to a two-degree temperature rise within the next 20 years.

Mining bitcoin involves running computer equipment around the clock to solve increasingly complex cryptographic puzzles (which themselves are verifying other payments made with bitcoin) that, over time, create more of the currency.

While many individuals and organisations have jumped on this new form of wealth creation, the resulting spike in electricity usage is really worrying scientists.
