30 Jan Plattsburgh company tries to keep cryptocurrency industry alive in the city

Jan 30, 2020 — A few years ago the North Country saw a kind of gold rush. Companies were coming here to earn digital currency. A lot of that excitement has faded, but there’s a local company in Plattsburgh that’s trying to keep the industry alive in the city.
Ryan Brienza is the CEO of Zafra, a data hosting service in Plattsburgh. Down a long, white hallway, Brienza rounds a corner and opens the door to the company’s headquarters in the city. The room is cluttered with hundreds of little black computers, each the size of a shoebox. There are blue, yellow, and black wires snaking out the back.
Those computers are making digital currency. In the business it’s called cryptoming, which Brienza compares to what any major credit card company has to do with its money.
