RICHMOND, MI — Hackers demanded that a Michigan school district pay $10,000 in bitcoin in order to restore access to its server.

Richmond Community Schools were scheduled to reopen from winter break on Thursday, Jan. 2 but had to postpone due to a hacking incident that occurred on their server, according to FOX 66.

The school’s IT department noticed the hack had occurred on Dec. 27.

The department immediately shut down the server and made sure that the back-up servers had not been compromised. Hackers locked out the school district from accessing their server.

There was a ransom that asked the school to pay $10,000 in bitcoin to restore access to the server, according to the school district.

The server is expected to be back up and running, virus-free, in time for school to resume on Monday.
