29 Apr Fauquier Sheriff reports uptick in BITCOIN “sexploitation” scam | News
The BITCOIN SCAM is back.
While this scam has existed for several years, in various forms, it is back in a sexploitation or blackmail context, according to a news release from the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office. The agency reported a significant uptick in reports concerning the scam.
In the “sexploitation” BITCOIN SCAM twist, the victim receives an email with a current, former or partial password in the email header, gaining the person’s confidence.
The scam email states their computer has been hacked and an unknown person(s) has control of their webcam. The email then states the recipient has been recorded visiting pornographic sites. The scam email then threatens to send the videos or other information to the victim’s social media contacts unless the victim purchases $2000 in BITCOIN and transfers the funds to the scammer within a time period.
The sheriff’s office advises residents to not engage or respond to such scam…
